PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
in the United Kingdom
The use of amusing animal names began in 1951 with the introduction of 'Zebra' Crossings
ZEBRA
Marked with Belisha beacons, flashing amber globes on black and white post. Road traffic MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing.
PELICAN
Introduced in 1969. The name is derived from PELICON (PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled). Push a button to cross.
PUFFIN
Red and green figures are above the control box on your side of the road. The name is derived from Pedestrian User-Friendly INtelligent. 'Smart' system also uses heat sensors to tell if pedestrians are waiting on the pavement.
TOUCAN
Allows cyclists and pedestrians to share crossing space. Since two-can, cyclists and pedestrians cross together, the name “toucan” was chosen.
PEGASUS
For horse riders. There is a 'high level' push button to operate the crossing. Also used in Peru.
